— Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting. 8:30 a.m. The upcoming Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held May 16 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 East William Street. On the docket for discussion is the South Carson Complete Street Project, Hardship Determination for Downtown businesses, contracts, and more.
— Senior Celebration at Casino Fandango to include vaccinations, raffle prizes, free medical testing and more. 9 a.m. The 21st annual Senior Celebration is coming to the new ball room of the Casino Fandango in Carson City on Thursday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is Northern Nevada’s largest health and information fair in honor of Older American month. Senior Celebration is a free event with over 70 senior living experts who will be gathering to share information about their products and services. In addition, there will be a raffle prizes, a cake walk, live entertainment, and demonstrations by vendors. There will also be immunizations offered for pneumonia 13 and 23, shingles, flu and tetanus. Blood pressure testing, no-cost genetic testing and more will be offered as well. For those interested in receiving a no-cost genetic test, please have your email information available and refrain from eating or drinking 30 minutes prior to participating.
— 10th annual Scavenger Hunt Around Carson City Now Underway. Daily through May 31. In celebration of Historic Preservation and Archaeological Awareness month, the Carson City Historic Resource Commission has organized the 10th Annual Scavenger Hunt. This year’s hunt focuses on the history and culture of the capital city. The Commission crafted the hunt to be an event the family can do together. Participants will be given clues about people, places and events that are important to the community’s history. Using the clues, participants will research and locate the answers. Clues are available online. To ensure participants visit the various sites on the scavenger hunt, on-site photographs will be required with the submittals. Completed answers are due by 3:00 p.m. May 31, 2019. Answers may be submitted in person at 108 East Proctor Street or emailed to planning@carson.org.
— Thursday Hike: Kings Canyon Waterfall Trail hosted by Muscle Powered. 3 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for its free leader-led hikes each Thursday to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Meet at the west end of Kings Canyon Road by the trailhead. Water and sturdy closed-toe shoes required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Bring a friend and, or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. In case of bad weather, we will cancel. Carson City CASA to host volunteer information hour. 5 p.m. Every child needs a hero, but abused children need superheroes! Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, will hold an information hour tonight in Carson City. Come get your questions answered first and then hang out afterward as new volunteer training will begin. See first hand how the organization works. The meeting begins at 5 p.m. Please contact Carson City CASAs Executive Director Melanie McCormick about how you can get involved and change a child’s life. We need volunteers more than ever as there are children sitting in foster care without a CASA advocate. CASA of Carson City is located at 1539 E. 5th Street in Carson City. — Carson City School District to Host Community Sustainability Night. 5 to 7 p.m. Carson City School District is hosting a Community Sustainability Night Thursday, May 16, 5-7 p.m., at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa. Families and members of the community are invited to come celebrate initiatives and partnerships for sustainable practices. The event will include highlights from the school district’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and sustainability initiatives, the Capital City Sustainability Partnership through the Nevada Green Institute, the new single-stream recycling program through Waste Management and the recently launched Green Dining District. The event will also include fun student-created videos, prizes, awards and light snacks and refreshments.
— Pour Your Heart Out art class at Rustically Divine. 5:30 to 7 p.m. Enjoy the wonders of pouring as professional artist Dana Childs teaches you how to create modern-abstract fluid effects with acrylic pouring onto stretched canvas. In this class we will learn pouring techniques combined with artistic knife and brush work with color and design in mind. All levels are welcome. Register online here. — Carson High School to host ceremony for seniors enlisting in the military. 6 p.m. Carson High School’s graduating seniors who are enlisting in the military will be recognized during the Salute to Scholars ceremony this Thursday, May 16 at 6 p.m. The military serves as a path towards social and economic mobility for some students. The military is both a way to see the world and to learn valuable skills that can be transferred into civilian life, such as leadership, independence, honor, and teamwork. The event will be at Carson High, Senator Square. The students enlisting in the US Armed Forces represent about 3 percent of the 2019 graduating class. The student commitment is as follows: Six U.S. Army, three Marines, five Air Force, one Navy, and two Nevada Army National Guard.

— Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. We are going to learn the style of dance of Night Club Two Step and some other exercises that will help you with your connection to your partner. $20. — Nevada Arts Council Presents: Facts and Figures. Daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Las Vegas artist Lolita Develay’s works consists mostly of oil paintings and watercolors executed in a trompe l’oeil (deceives the eye) intertwined with abstract features. She is currently exploring prevailing social values in American mainstream culture. These paintings embody her ultimate desire for lush surfaces and the luxury of time that allowed them to be created. — Student art show open at WNC’s Main Gallery at Carson City campus. Daily. The artistic talents of Western Nevada College students will be on display in the college art gallery for the next month. The 2019 Student Art Show will be shown through Wednesday, May 15 in the Bristlecone Building on WNC’s Carson City campus.The exhibit features juried artwork from WNC students who were enrolled in classes during the fall or are currently enrolled during the spring semester. Students will compete for first, second and third places in drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Students will also have the opportunity to price and sell their artwork. WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open to the public six days a week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.
— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.
— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.
— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
